Imagine your cat having its own toilet bowl. I know it would be a funny sight. But hey, why would what works for humans not work for cats? That’s probably what the manufactures of the CatGenie Litter box Self Washing Self Flushing Cat thought when they came up with this idea.
CatGenie Litter Box Reviews
Collecting cat waste in a box of litter is unsanitary. Cleaning the mess out is unpleasant and carrying heavy cat litter in and of the home is just a plain waste. The CatGenie is dust, germ, odor and litter free and automatically washes, sanitizes and dries itself. The CatGenie has a Two-Year Warranty.
Easy do-it-yourself set-up. Recommended setup locations: bathroom (toilet)
If you have a rigid water line in your bathroom, you may need to replace it with a flexible one) or utility/laundry room.

CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box review by “Joneen2”
This really does work as advertised. Hubby hooked it up so I can’t speak to how hard/easy that was, but once hooked up, the thing ran exactly as the product description says. We have three cats and two got adjusted pretty quickly. The third took several weeks. The tips they send on how to get your cat adjusted are very good.
Now for the bad: the cleaning cycle takes about 30 minutes. So if you have multiple cats, you better hope they don’t all have to go at the same time (which happens if you feed them at the same time).
If your cat doesn’t have firm stools (like my 13-year kitty), it will spread around, fall out of the scoop and generally make a mess. Sometimes Cat Genie gets it all, sometimes it doesn’t.
When it doesn’t, the poop basically gets cooked. That is the worst smell in the WHOLE WORLD. We had to open all windows, turn on fans, light matches, spray air freshener and it still didn’t the get the smell out for an hour. If you have company over when this happens, you will be very embarrassed or happy if you want them to leave. Depends on the company, I guess.
In summary:
- Good for households with 1 or 2 cats maximum
- Good for healthy cats with firm stools
- Really awesome product if the above applies to you
- Suggestion to PetNovations: shorten the cleaning cycle!
CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box review by “mjmgraphix”
I purchased the CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box in October of 2010. After the fairly simple installation of hooking the splitter to the Laundry Cold Water supply and the drain hook to the Laundry Drain, it has been working near flawlessly for 2 years. I have had to on ONE occasion take the entire thing apart due to a clog. I will admit that it is quite gross if you have to do this, however not as bad as I was expecting. Once I cleaned the entire unit, put it back together all was well again.
Yes, if your cat’s poo is not firm, it can get broken into smaller pieces that get missed by the scoop, and when heat dried, can stink up the place, but that is fairly rare if you feed your cats quality dry food. Both of my cats are older (10 and 11 years old) and they both took to it well.
The 11 year old is more finicky, so if it isn’t clean enough for him, he will just poop on the rubber mat sitting next to it, which I then either scoop into the CatGenie or flush it if it is too hard to be processed (if it sat overnight or two before I noticed it). I put my setting on automatic and it cleans about 4 times per day for 30 minutes each cycle. The cats don’t seem to mind waiting and my finicky cat actually likes to wait until just after the cycle is complete, so he can poop in a comfy bed of toasty litter granules.
I have never called customer service, so I cannot attest to their quality, but the instructions have most everything you would need in them. If you can read, you should have no issues. The one thing I must say that has made everything work flawlessly and keep it running smoothly is the maintenance cartridge, I use it every other month and it cleans very well!!
CatGenie Litter Box review by I Buy Too Much
We got it because we lived in a very small space and had to scoop twice a day with three cats to keep smells out. We purchased this and it was pretty easy to set up. We set it on 3 times per day cleaning and just let things happen. The cats were a bit afraid of it at first, but slowly adapted until we were able to just take away their litter pan completely.
The cleanings go like clockwork, pretty much, but the cycle takes like 45 minutes. When it gets to the draining part, it’s kind of noisy, but overall it’s relatively unobtrusive and fuss-free. We’d let it run for a month at a time without so much as glancing at it (probably not recommended).
Depending on how much your cat digs, you’ll need maybe a box of granules every month-two months, and the boxes are so tiny and light! Occasionally the scoop will miss a turd and when it hits the dryer…. It’s not great, but it happens so little that it’s still worth it. I’d rather smell baked turd for an hour than deal with normal litter smell.
The thing is easy to take apart. The number of little parts is small, so there’s not a lot to learn about once you’re inside. Troubleshooting is easy. Most of the time it can be traced to just too much grime clogging up the system, which the maintenance cartridge will prevent (don’t skimp on this – always use the maintenance cartridge, seriously).
If there’s one thing I will always rave about though, it’s the customer service. PetNovations has been amazing to me.

CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box Review Verdict
Quality: average
Why you’d buy it: the CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box is truly unique in its kind. Not only is the manufacturer proud to present this unique product, NetSolutions also provides an excellent customer service.
Why you wouldn’t: if your cat’s poo is not firm, it can get broken into smaller pieces that get missed by the scoop, and when heat dried, can stink up the place. You can solve this problem by feeding your cats dry food which will help to get their poo firm enough. In addition, people report a long cleaning cycle (between 30 and 45 minutes). The CatGenie Litter Box Self Washing Self Flushing is also pretty expensive. You’ll also need to install a new SaniSolution cartridge every 3 months on average and get Washable Granules
