“We ordered the No Crow collar for our pullet-that-turned-out-to-be-a-cockerel. Roosters are not prohibited where we live, but we do have neighbors, and he was getting LOUD. It did take time to get the fit right, and we almost gave up, but I am SO glad we didn’t. Once we got the collar properly fitted (JUST tight enough and in the right spot on his neck), his crow was drastically reduced in volume, to the point where neighbors started asking us if we’d gotten rid of him. He was still able to make all of his rooster sounds, eat normally, and mate with his hens. After the first few days, he didn’t seem bothered by it, other than occasionally picking at the yellow “No Crow” tag. We just ordered our 2nd collar since after 6 months of picking at the tag, he had slightly torn the mesh on the first one. (I would recommend removing the tag before putting it on, since that was something he could easily grab and pick at.) But another $23 is well worth keeping my beloved rooster AND having happy neighbors.

Hello all.
I have just signed up and discovered this old post when reading through the forum.
I, like James P, bought one of those collars as my young rooster was getting to be a bit enthusiastic with his crowing (sometimes at 3-30am!!!). The collar consisted of an elastic type cloth strip about 30mm wide with velcro stitched on each end. They were available in different lengths for different size chooks but sadly, I did not find the collar was particularly effective at quietening him enough. It did however give me a few ideas about making my own.

I bought a length of 20mm wide black elastic and cut off two lengths about 150mm long —– I stitched these together every 12mm, side by side —– this allowed the now 40mm elastic to fold easily along the middle as the rooster bent his neck. Then I stitched a piece of velcro on each end. Getting the collar just right involves a little trial and error. Put it on the rooster with a finger between the collar and his neck (just below his collar feathers) and adjust from there —- tighten the collar just a little each time till you get it just right and he is still comfortable. My rooster makes all the chook sounds, clucking, sounding warnings etc, but when it comes to a crow it comes out as if he has a hoarse throat —- it is a crow but a very, very subdued one. He is alive and quite happy and seems to think he is crowing.

I’ve had one on my rooster for about 3 weeks at this point due to a neighbor complaining. Being a good neighbor I tried it. I have slowly been tightening in order to not stress him out too much. I must say it has definitely been getting better, and i can barely hear him from 200 feet away. That being said, it hasn’t been an extended period of time, but i think it works well at this point.

My guess is that most people issues were trying to tighten it too much too quickly. As long as you keep an eye on the roo and look for signs that he can breathe and ensure that the feathers are laying comfortably for him it works great.

Give it time though, don’t rush to tighten it.

I use velcro and it does lessen it (He’s no louder than a hen), but I’m not a fan of it. I left it on my cockerel a couple days and I noticed a gurgling sound when he breathed. I then started to bring him in at night and took the collar off while he slept (he doesn’t crow when he’s inside). In the mornings I put it back on before he goes out with the girls. No more gurgling sound, but I just don’t like him having to wear it. Doesn’t seem fair to him. I’m trying to find him a good home outside of city limits with people that won’t just eat him. Give your cockerel some time to adjust to having something on his neck by allowing him to wear it loosely the first day.

It’s a new season! After that, start the adjustment process. We advise starting the collar loose, then adjusting it a bit tighter every day until you have found the most effective fit. Do keep an eye on your guy very closely for signs of difficult breathing or distress. The collar should ultimately be closely fitted, like a belt.
